"Sune hain bharat band hone wala hai"........ This is the advertisement, nowadays making rounds on TV, about IPL. Initially I thought IPL walaas have hired some people to block the trains when a colleague whom i ve always seen crying and i call him the 'tragedy king', came crying as ahmedabad rajdhani was cancelled and he could not go home to celebrate Holi with his family... incidentally this colleague is a gujjar and had heartily support to gujjar agitations for the same reason 'reservation in jobs'. Gujjars went and here come Jats. whats this! Democracy! is it the same democracy for which people in Libya, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen etc. are bearing the wrath of pro-dictator forces. Is their struggle for democracy is about making the life of common man paralysed in future! Are they fighting for democracy or the mobocracy! I remember Mahatma Gandhi's words about democracy. He said 'doing the evil to 'less' for the benefit of 'more' is never understood to me, instead a thing should be done for the benefit of more and more people with out doing evil to any one!' But who cares about Mahatma today!
Reservation was introduced to lift those who were considered low in the society, the reason of reservation in job was more social than economical, but what has it become today! It was only today, a friend of mine, who hails from western UP told me about a sad incident. The modesty of a girl of a backward caste and her sister-in-law was outraged on the pretax of playing holi. A case has been registered with the police but nothing has come up yet. Interestingly gundas involved in the heinous crime are from the same caste which had been recently struggling, agitating and blocking train and road routs for inclusion in to backwards! Yes humiliating the women is certainly more than a backward act and such incidents do happen especially with the women of oppressed classes, and often in the western Utter Pradesh. So many laws have been enacted but they have never helped the poor and the oppressed. But who commit these heinous acts are mostly those who are strong in number, economy and votes. They are not only big vote banks but they also influence votes of oppressed classes, who are forced to sing in their tunes as they either work in the fields of these influential classes but are also terrorised by them time and again. The women of these weak people are raped and harassed, their modesty outraged, and thereafter they are stopped from getting legitimate redressal. Infact the benefit of the facilities introduced for the weak has never reached to them and the same is being alarmingly snatched by the vote banks.
Nowadays democracy in India means not paying electricity bills and thwarting any attempt to recover them. It means blocking roads and train tracks for their malafied demands. It means woo more and more votes of a class by any means. It means pressurising governments in the form of mobs and pressure groups. It means yielding to the unfair demands of vote banks. It means mocking at the provisions made for the less privileged. Strange it is, if the people of Libiya are losing their life for the same democracy!
Hope a proud Samaaj like Jats which has always given too much to society in the form of food, soldiers and sportsmen doesn't run behind the mirage of reservation. And the country sings in their honour.........
