Batala, a town in Punjab, and other places are facing communal clashes over a controversy of a picture of Jesus holding a cigarette and a beer can. These books are not prescribed by the Meghalaya Board of school education. But are ones chosen by the schools, most of them are missionary and run by Christians themselves. Was it just ignorance or a deliberate attempt to make a controversy? Had the schools been sensible, the controversy could be averted. Publisher blames it to the designer. As a publisher, I can understand how a designer can do that, mostly they are less educated and adopt pictures in their designs which attract their attention. But where publisher and school administration were sleeping! A publisher being a businessman can’t do such thing deliberately. The responsibility lies more on the schools than the publisher as they are the specialist people and know the magnitude of the errors. Let it be but the act is as bad as painting goddess Saraswati's objectionable paintings or painting Lord Ganesha on under wears.
